There are two types of 05 numbers currently in use in the UK: 055 and 056 numbers. 055 numbers are used for corporate numbering and 056 numbers are used for VOIP numbering.

055 numbers

055 numbers were introduced so that large organizations could buy up blocks of individual phone numbers that they could use for internal phone networks throughout the country. Because of their non-geographic status, 055 numbers worked well for this, but they never became exceptionally popular. Instead, most companies opt to buy up blocks of sequential numbers that have a lot of spare capacity. This means that most companies use 08 or 03 area code numbers instead.

056 numbers

If you get a call from an 056 area code, it’s a VoIP service. Voice Over Internet Protocol is used as an alternative to traditional landlines. VoIP calls require a strong, steady Internet connection to be used instead of a landline. Since 2004, VoIP users have also been able to use 01 and 02 area codes as well, which can be preferential since they reflect local, familiar area codes.

History of 05 area codes

Before 2017, 0550 area codes could be used as toll-free numbers, but this was phased out in favor of the 08 area codes. Any company that was using the 0550 area code was offered an 0808 5 area code instead. While the number was one digit longer, the last six digits were the same as their 0550 numbers.

Cost to call

The cost to call 05 numbers varies widely depending on the caller’s network provider, how the call is being placed, location, and time of day. To avoid surprise charges, callers should contact their provider to see if 05 area codes are included in any free minute plans. Since 05 area codes are considered non-standard, they are not charged the same way. Some will be charged like geographical landlines and some will not.
